General & Getting Started
What services does Giles Financial Consulting provide?
Giles Financial Consulting provides financial support for entrepreneurs and growing businesses, including Fractional CFO Advisory, Accounting & Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation & Strategic Tax Planning, Cash Flow Management, Financial Analysis, and Business Financial Strategy.
Our services are designed to meet businesses at different stages—from establishing reliable accounting systems to providing executive-level financial guidance for growth.
What types of businesses do you work with?
We primarily work with entrepreneurs, startups, and small to mid-sized businesses that need professional financial support without building a full in-house accounting department.
Some clients need reliable monthly bookkeeping and accounting. Others have reached a stage where they need forecasting, cash flow management, profitability analysis, and Fractional CFO guidance. Our services are tailored to the complexity and stage of the business.
My business is new. Am I too small to work with GFC?
Not necessarily. A newer business with growing financial activity may benefit from establishing professional bookkeeping, accounting, and tax systems early rather than trying to correct them later.
The right level of service depends on your transaction volume, financial complexity, goals, and the type of support you need—not simply how long you have been in business.
Do you only work with businesses in Houston or Texas?
No. Giles Financial Consulting is Houston-based, but we work with clients in Texas and beyond through virtual accounting, tax, and advisory services. In-person strategic meetings may also be available for local clients when appropriate.
How do I get started working with GFC?
Start by telling us about your business, current financial situation, and what you are trying to accomplish. You don't need to know exactly which service you need before contacting us.
We'll evaluate your needs and recommend the appropriate next step, whether that's bookkeeping, tax support, financial cleanup, or more strategic CFO-level guidance.
Fractional CFO Services
What is a Fractional CFO?
A Fractional CFO gives a growing business access to executive-level financial leadership without the expense of hiring a full-time CFO.
Rather than simply reporting what has already happened, a Fractional CFO helps you use financial data to manage cash flow, understand profitability, build forecasts and budgets, evaluate opportunities, and make better business decisions.
How do I know if my business needs a Fractional CFO?
You may be ready for Fractional CFO support if:
- Your revenue is growing, but you're unsure whether profitability is keeping pace.
- You frequently make financial decisions based primarily on the balance in your bank account.
- Cash flow feels unpredictable despite strong sales.
- You don't have a reliable budget or financial forecast.
- You're preparing to expand, hire, pursue financing, or make a significant investment.
- You receive financial reports but aren't sure what the numbers mean for your next move.
- You need strategic financial leadership but aren't ready to hire a full-time CFO.
A simple way to think about it: If you know what happened financially but aren't sure what should happen next, you may have outgrown accounting alone.
What is the difference between a Bookkeeper, Accountant, and Fractional CFO?
Each serves a different purpose within your financial operation:
Bookkeepers maintain day-to-day financial records, transactions, reconciliations, and categorization.
Accountants review financial information for accuracy, prepare financial statements, address accounting issues, and support tax and compliance requirements.
Fractional CFOs look forward. They use your financial information to analyze performance, manage cash flow, forecast future results, evaluate major decisions, and help develop financial strategy.
A growing business may need all three functions working together.
Can a Fractional CFO help my business prepare for funding or growth?
Yes. Reliable financial records and credible reporting become increasingly important when pursuing financing, government contracts, expansion, new locations, major investments, or other growth opportunities.
Depending on your engagement, GFC can help evaluate financial readiness, identify weaknesses, analyze performance, develop forecasts, and strengthen the financial information you use to make or present major business decisions.
Accounting, Bookkeeping & Tax
What's the difference between bookkeeping and CFO advisory?
Bookkeeping provides the financial foundation. It keeps your transactions recorded, accounts reconciled, and financial information organized.
CFO advisory takes those numbers further.
Bookkeeping tells us what happened. CFO advisory helps determine why it happened, what it means, and what to do next.
Some businesses need bookkeeping. Others need strategic financial guidance. Growing companies may need both.
Can you clean up bookkeeping that hasn't been maintained properly?
Yes. If your books are behind, inaccurate, contain uncategorized transactions, or haven't been properly reconciled, GFC can assess the condition of your records and determine what needs to be corrected.
Because every cleanup is different, the scope and pricing depend on factors such as the period involved, number of accounts, transaction volume, and condition of the existing records.
How often will I receive financial statements and updates?
The frequency depends on your engagement. Monthly accounting clients may receive regular financial statements and financial reviews, while CFO advisory engagements can include more frequent analysis, forecasting, KPI monitoring, and strategic discussions.
Our goal isn't simply to send you reports. We want you to understand what your numbers are telling you and how they affect your business decisions.
Do you prepare both business and individual tax returns?
Yes. GFC provides tax preparation for individuals and businesses, along with tax planning and strategy.
For business owners, we take a broader view of the relationship between the business and the owner's tax situation rather than treating tax preparation as an isolated once-a-year event.
What is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning?
Tax preparation looks backward. Tax planning looks forward.
Tax preparation reports financial activity that has already occurred.
Tax planning takes place before the year ends and evaluates decisions that could affect your future tax position. The goal is to identify opportunities and make informed decisions while there is still time to act—not after the tax year has already closed.
Do you offer year-round tax planning or just annual filing?
Both. We provide tax preparation as well as proactive tax planning and strategy.
Business owners in particular can benefit from year-round planning because decisions involving compensation, business structure, major purchases, retirement contributions, and other financial matters can have tax consequences long before a return is filed.
Do I have to wait until tax season to work with you?
No. In fact, for business owners, we generally recommend the opposite.
Bookkeeping, financial management, and tax planning are most effective when addressed throughout the year. Waiting until tax season can limit the time available to correct problems or take advantage of planning opportunities.
Can you work with our existing accounting tools, such as QuickBooks?
Yes. We work with QuickBooks and other financial systems and can help evaluate, clean up, optimize, or establish accounting processes based on the needs of your business.
Onboarding & Engagement
How are your services priced?
Pricing is based on the type, complexity, and level of financial support required.
Ongoing bookkeeping, accounting, tax services, financial cleanup, and Fractional CFO advisory require different levels of involvement, so we don't believe in forcing every client into the same package.
After learning about your needs, we'll recommend an appropriate scope of work and discuss pricing before the engagement begins.
What does the onboarding process look like?
- Discovery & Assessment: We learn about your business, current financial systems, challenges, and objectives.
- Financial Review: When appropriate, we review your existing books, reports, workflows, and financial information to identify immediate needs.
- Strategy & Scope: We recommend the appropriate services and establish priorities, deliverables, and expectations.
- Integration: We obtain the necessary secure system access and establish communication and reporting procedures.
- Execution: We begin the agreed-upon accounting, tax, cleanup, or advisory work and establish the ongoing financial rhythm appropriate for your engagement.
Are your services remote, or do you meet in person?
Our services are primarily delivered virtually, allowing us to serve clients efficiently in Texas and beyond. GFC is based in Houston, and in-person strategic meetings may be available for local clients when appropriate.
What should I expect when I first contact Giles Financial Consulting?
Expect a conversation about more than just the service you think you need.
We'll want to understand what's happening financially, where the business is headed, and what problems you're trying to solve. From there, we can determine whether GFC is the right fit and what level of support makes sense.
You don't have to diagnose your own financial problem before contacting us. That's part of what we're here to help you figure out.
